Over four years ago, my wife had graduated dental school and we set out to do a scratch startup practice. We had a lot of bases to cover in equipping our practice to best serve our new patients. For anyone that has been through this, you know what an enormous task this can be. We, like most practices, knew that practice management software would be the backbone of our business and ended up choosing Open Dental as our solution. Being a software developer and “tech junkie,” I felt the open-architecture nature of Open Dental would be a good fit, as it allows a lot of flexibility in add-on modules.
Jump forward a year and the practice was moving along. We were keeping a relatively full schedule and steadily growing. While our practice was doing well, there were definite efficiency challenges and other pain-points our team was facing.
We tried multiple solutions for automating recalls, processing electronic payments, and providing online forms that integrate with Open Dental. And while there are many solutions out there, we struggled to find one solution that did everything we wanted and did it well. So, I did what anyone with a passion for software and solving problems would do - I developed Flex as a tool to address the exact issues our practice was facing.
Fortunately, Flex worked as well as I had hoped. And, once word about Flex got out in the Open Dental community, other practices began asking if they could try it. I continued adding on features and received more requests to try Flex. And while I never intended Flex to be anything more than a software to help our dental practice become more efficient and simplify patient communications, the demand from other practices was telling me that Flex was addressing a considerable gap in the market that I had experienced myself while previously researching other patient communication solutions.
